THEORETICAL APPROACHES TO THE STUDY OF GENDER CHARACTERISTICS IN LANGUAGE

Abstract

This article is devoted to a review of theoretical approaches to the study of gender characteristics in language. A variety of theoretical perspectives are considered, including social constructivist, feminist, queer linguistic, cognitive, and sociolinguistic approaches. Each offers a unique perspective on the ways in which gender norms and identities are constructed, represented, and impacted through language. The article also discusses how these theoretical perspectives help expand our understanding of gender characteristics in language and their influence on sociocultural and cognitive processes.
