THE THEORETICAL FOUNDATIONS OF THE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN THE QUR’AN AND HADITH

Abstract

This article investigates intertextual relations between Qur’anic verses and hadith texts as mechanisms of meaning transfer, recontextualization, and pragmatic expansion. An intertextual approach does not treat hadith merely as “proof-texts” but as an explanatory discourse that operationalizes Qur’anic principles into ethical guidance, normative boundaries, and communal practice. The study proposes a three-layer method: (1) lexical-semantic alignment (keywords, formulas, recurring rhetorical patterns), (2) thematic-narrative parallels (values, motifs, devotion and social conduct), and (3) pragmatic function (moral instruction, legal norm-setting, spiritual consolation) followed by contextual comparison. A structured verse–hadith table demonstrates distinct link types: explicit reference, implicit echo, thematic parallel, and normative recontextualization. Findings indicate that hadith frequently specifies general Qur’anic statements, provides practical criteria for application, and clarifies normative scope. Methodological caution is emphasized: intertextual resonance does not automatically imply direct borrowing; similarities can arise from shared conceptual fields within the broader Islamic discourse. Therefore, intertextual reading should be integrated with classical hadith scholarship—especially isnād evaluation and matn criticism—to strengthen academic reliability. The article contributes a replicable framework for mapping intertextual ties across foundational Islamic texts and for enhancing systematic interpretation in tafsīr and hadith commentary.
