The article provides a systematic analysis of the formation and evolution of the concept of modernization in China. Particular attention is paid to the socio-economic and political reforms implemented in the People’s Republic of China since the second half of the twentieth century, as well as to their theoretical and ideological foundations. The study examines the early conceptual forms of modernization during the Mao Zedong era, the “Four Modernizations” programme proposed by Zhou Enlai, and the model of the socialist market economy that emerged after 1978 under the leadership of Deng Xiaoping. The article substantiates that the Chinese model of modernization, unlike Western theories of “Westernization,” developed on the basis of national characteristics, the leading role of the state, and a gradual, phased approach to reform. In conclusion, the author highlights the contribution of China’s modernization experience to the development of global modernization theories.
