THE STANDARD OF LIVING OF THE POPULATION AND THE STATE OF THE SOCIAL SPHERE IN UZBEKISTAN IN THE 1980S

This article analyzes the living standards of the population and the state of the social sphere in Uzbekistan, particularly in the Navoi region, during the 1980s. Based on academic and statistical sources, it highlights the negative consequences of the Soviet administrative-command system and the cotton monopoly, declining household incomes, unemployment, and shortages of food and consumer goods. Furthermore, it examines problems with housing, drinking water, gas and electricity supply, violations of labor protection for women, and the infrastructure crisis in the healthcare and education systems. The analysis shows that amid rapid demographic growth, the material and technical base of the social sector failed to meet the population’s needs, leading to an overall decline in living standards in the republic.
